This theme is the same recurring theme of his previous work, Mercury. Felix, a teenage boy that symbolizes the common Filipino, is mystified and attracted to the mysterious Fil-Am Synder brothers- a stab on the Filipino mindset that Americans and other Western nations are superior to us. From references to Noli de Castro's Magandang Gabi, Bayan, The Flor Contemplacion movie, and the Backstreet Boys. Laxamana's script mixes social satire with nostalgic yet humorous references from the 1990s era something that a lot us can really relate to. Two brilliant minds combining their forces is what lies behind this little indie gem.The clever script which was originally titled Dos Mestizos, was written by Jason Paul Laxamana (director of the savagely entertaining dark comedy Mercury is Mine, 2016). As things get more complicated, this relationship with the Snyder brothers ultimately leads him to be entangled in a dark path involving a plan for murder, his sexual awakening and his first heartbreak. He gets to know more of their background, particularly their family. But as days passed, he soon develops a strong, unusual friendship with the brothers. They start off a bit awkward, with Magnus calling him a weirdo after seeing him checking out his Omegaboy TShirt (or his chest, maybe?). Magnus then brings him to his home, where he meets their mother (Ana Capri) and the other Snyder brother. Although he was a bit adamant at first, he eventually gives in and agrees. Later on, after failing the test from one of his subjects, the elder Snyder boy decides to ask for help from Felix. Felix becomes curious at the two mestizos, particularly with elder Magnus, after his first glance of the boys. But Felix' life is then turned upside down after the Film-Am brothers Magnus (Ethan Salvador) and Maxim Snyder (in an award-winning performance by Jameson Blake) transfers to his his school. His daily routine is all about coming to school, getting the top spot in class, and nothing more. He even calls them "little brown monkeys", forgetting the fact that this term used by Spanish and American colonists to call Filipinos like him during the era of their occupation. It's not my fault that I'm stuck with these unremarkable individuals in this forlorn school," he writes in his journal. He looks over his classmates as inferior to him because he is intellectually inclined, unlike the rest of them who usually spends their dull time playing sipa, basketball or hanging out with their barkadas in the vicinity of the campus. The whole film is told from his point of view, and is usually narrated through passages from his daily journal (which was supposed to be a project for their English class). Let me tell you why.Ģ Cool 2 Be 4Gotten follows Felix Salonga (in an unforgettable performance by Khalil Ramos) a friendless, overachieving top notcher in a typical public high school in the province of Pampanga during the late 1990s. This prompted me to watch the film multiple times. It was also one of my most memorable movie experience ever. It was my first time watching a Cinema One Originals entry during the festival run itself. I honestly have no idea what the whole film was all about not until I actually watched it during it's gala premiere at Cinema 1 of Trinoma last year, November 17, 2016. That is what happened to me after I experienced the emotional roller coaster of Petersen Vargas' 2 Cool 2 Be 4Gotten. I know that sounds too much but it is true. But I have never imagined that an indie film can actually have the power to affect me this much and change my entire life. There is freedom with what the director can do with his/ her film without the worry of being controlled by the studio producer. This is mostly because indie films tend to have better quality than the ones produced by big film companies. Honestly, I think most of the time, indie films are better than mainstream movies. Ever since then, I frequently watched indie films every once in a while or when I get the chance. Insomniac is expanding into the Marvel video game universe with the studio's recently announced Spider-Man 2 and an all-new Wolverine game. So, with X-COM developer Firaxis Games working on the upcoming Midnight Suns tactical RPG, it doesn't appear as though Marvel is looking to make amends with Activision any time soon.In the olden days, superheroes posed a problem for games developers. The game eventually saw an upgraded version on the PlayStation 5 alongside an expansion featuring Miles Morales in 2020. Insomniac Games is the current developer of Spider-Man games, debuting with Marvel's Spider-Man on the PlayStation 4 in 2018. Critics were generally disappointed in the lack of innovation on Shattered Dimensions' gameplay, however, though most enjoyed the story and voice acting. Edge of Time played similarly to its predecessor, with writing from Peter David this time around and featuring voice work from Josh Keaton, Katee Sackhoff and Val Kilmer. The game picked up after the events of Shattered Dimensions, though this time only letting players switch between the original Spider-Man and his 2099 counterpart. Shattered Dimensions was generally well-liked among critics who praised it for its unique worlds, engaging story and fast-paced if not repetitious old-school combat mechanics.Ī year later saw the release of Spider-Man: Edge of Time on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Nintendo DS and 3DS. The game featured four playable versions of Spider-Man across the Amazing, Noir, 2099 and Ultimate universes alongside voicework from Neil Patrick Harris and writing by Dan Slott. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was originally released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii and DS in 2010. RELATED: Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Gets the Legends Treatment The aim of the remasters was reportedly nothing substantial, however, with the source saying the games would be close to their original 20 versions, featuring only "minor graphical enhancements/bugfixes." In fact, the source even described the projects as a "quick money-maker" that was intended to leach off the hype surrounding Insomniac's then-upcoming Spider-Man title for the PlayStation 4. Some early assets, such as menus and button icons with higher resolution textures was as far as the team seemed to have gotten in the games' development. The chances of these Shattered Dimensions or Edge of Time remasters seeing the light of day appear slim, unfortunately, as the source explained only small teams were able to extract old source code from hard drives before the projects were canceled. RELATED: How Spider-Man: Web of Shadows PERFECTS One Crucial Spider-Man Mechanic Yet, the deal ultimately fell through when Activision pushed for the rights to develop new Marvel games, and so no deal was ever officially signed. Marvel was initially on board, according to the source, with Activision going so far as to begin "early prototyping" on Shattered Dimensions/Edge of Time remasters. While the publisher's Marvel license expired in 2014, several years later Activision attempted to regain Marvel's interest with a deal that would see digital versions of some of the publisher's older titles relisted, such as Ultimate Alliance 1 and 2. Although nearly a decade has passed since Activision lost its license to develop Marvel video games, two of the publisher's final Spider-Man titles were apparently on the verge of receiving modern remasters.Īccording to an anonymous source at Activision via Reddit user armoredadvanced, both Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time were reportedly set to be remastered on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Switch. There are other practical uses for shields outside of parries. Sure this takes a little practice, but nothing worth getting good at comes easy. Keep that buckler hidden as a secondary off-handed weapon, and bring it out once the opportunity arises. Remember, ultras can NOT be parried when two-handed. This means a-rhythmic attack patterns and ultra greatswords. An experienced PvP player knows the parrying shields and will adjust their game accordingly. That mixed in with proper spacing, rolling, and countering will see more value in using a shield in the off-hand.īut what about Parries? Hide it. However, holding the shield up in hopes of blocking everything being thrown the player’s way will end in tragedy. There is value in learning how to time the shield in order to deflect one attack and still roll away from danger. Shields stand no chance against a well-planned build and ultimately waste Stamina. An experienced player loves seeing their victims holding up a shield to protect themselves. Having one’s guard broken is the worst thing that can happen during a PvP engagement. Furthermore, an opponent with a large pool of HP will absorb those attacks and then punish the player now that their Stamina is depleted. Consecutive R1s (Excluding two-handed ultras) can be easily parried. On the flip side, do NOT relentlessly spam R1. Instead, get out of range and walk backward/strafe to recharge on Stamina. Roll spamming is a great way to drain the Stamina meter and leave oneself open to attack. Survivability is more important than damage output. Invest any remaining stat points into Vigor and Min/Maxing one's weapons (more on that to come). Once players have chosen a weapon they enjoy using, they’d be wise to figure out how much stamina it requires to get two, maybe three good swings off while still being able to roll out of harm's way. Unfortunately for heavy builds, those two-handed ultra attacks are going to be few and far between with poor stamina management. When competing at lower levels, most consecutive attacks will deplete a player’s Stamina rapidly. Keeping track of one’s stamina will often mean the difference between life and death. With the continued delay of Elden Ring, fans need a way to quell their excitement. There is a certain class of gamer that gets their excitement from a series that is entirely designed to torture them. The first Newcleus LP, Jam on Revenge, was a bit of a disappointment, and their second album, Space Is the Place, did even more poorly upon release in 1984. "Computer Age (Push the Button)" was a more mature single, with accomplished rapping and better synthesizer effects, and it also hit the R&B Top 40. The single hit Top 40 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1983, and its follow-up, the more popular "Jam on It," reached the Top Ten and crossed into the Hot 100, where it peaked at number 56. A huge street success, the track became known unofficially as "the Wikki-Wikki song" (after the refrain) when it was re-released later that year on Sunnyview, it had become "Jam On Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)." The track, "Jam-On Revenge," impressed producer Joe Webb more than the other Newcleus material, and it became the group's first single, released in 1983 on Mayhew Records. With several minutes left at the end of the tape, Newcleus recorded a favorite from their block parties, with each member's vocals sped up to resemble the Chipmunks. The foursome named their group Newcleus as a result of the coming together of their families.īy this time, Cenac had begun to accumulate a collection of electronic recording equipment, and the quartet recorded a demo tape of material. Many members - MCs as well as DJs - came and went as the group played block parties all over the borough, and by 1979, the group centered around Cenac, his future wife Yvette "Lady E" Cook, Monique Angevin, and her future husband, Bob "Chilly B" Crafton. The origins of the group lay in a 1977 Brooklyn DJ collective known as Jam-On Productions, which included Ben "Cozmo D" Cenac, his cousin Monique Angevin, and her brother Pete (all of whom were teenagers and still in high school). Newcleus contributed a true electro classic in "Jam on It," a Top Ten R&B hit that has been immortalized on hundreds of hip-hop mixtapes and often included in even techno DJs' sets. It does, however, prove a smart reminder that in the Badlands, there’s always going to be a threat, one way or another. The return of the old ways, of firepower, is an intriguing thread for the show to go down, and so it’s a shame that it’s a tease rather than a promise. The set-up for a fourth season when there will not be one hurts, with the introduction of a gun and The Master warning Sunny, in another realm, of a worse threat. The major disappointment of the episode comes through the knowledge the show has been cancelled. Daniel Wu as Sunny, Nick Frost as Bajie – Into the Badlands 316. His death is a powerful moment on the show, Sunny’s leap of faith to cement his end beautifully shot and leaving a lasting image. The reintroduction of the hooks earlier on the episode is a good foreshadowing of their return against Pilgrim. Related The Nevers Review: Exposure (Season 1 Episode 2) His arc feels long completed, and so he did not have a ton left to do except exact Pilgrim’s orders. His potential earlier on the series relegated him to more of a troubled henchman during the third season.Īt the same time, his character reached a conclusion of sorts, and while his final showdown with Sunny never happened, it’s more emotionally tinged for Tilda to be involved. M.K.’s end comes at a diminishing of his character. Their deaths on the show come as needed, as Pilgrim reached his apex and started to become blindly evil toward anyone mildly disagreeing with him. The body count is quite high on “Seven Strike As One,” M.K., Pilgrim, and (kind of) Sunny being the major casualties. Daniel Wu as Sunny – Into the Badlands 316. It’s an action-packed, payoff-heavy episode, where taking down Pilgrim and starting new threads to follow becomes a satisfying end, but with some caveats. On Into the Badlands Season 3 Episode 16, “Seven Strike As One,” the final battle comes with each character doing their part to take down the ultimate threat in Pilgrim. Other works represent mecha as one component of an integrated military force, supported by and fighting alongside tanks, fighter aircraft, and infantry, functioning as a mechanical cavalry. Often, they are the primary means of combat, with conflicts sometimes being decided through gladiatorial matches. In most cases, mecha are depicted as fighting machines, whose appeal comes from the combination of potent weaponry with a more stylish combat technique than a mere vehicle. They are usually much larger than the wearer, like Iron Man's enemy the Iron Monger, or the mobile suits depicted in the Gundam series. While the distinction is often hazy, mecha typically does not refer to form-fitting powered armor such as Iron Man's suit. Mechas differ from robots in that they are piloted from a cockpit, typically located in the chest or head of the mech. Outside of this usage, it has become associated with large humanoid machines with limbs or other biological characteristics. In Japanese, mecha encompasses all mechanical objects, including cars, guns, computers, and other devices, and the term "robot" ( ロボット, robotto) or "giant robot" is used to distinguish limbed vehicles from other mechanical devices. The word "mecha" ( メカ, meka) is an abbreviation, first used in Japanese, of the word " mechanical". Alternatively, in the original Japanese context of the word, "mecha" may refer to mobile machinery/vehicles (including aircraft) in general, manned or otherwise. The term may also refer to real world piloted humanoid or non-humanoid robotic platforms, either currently in existence or still on the drawing board (i.e. The concept of Super Robot and Real Robot are two such examples found in Japanese anime and manga. Different subgenres exist, with varying connotations of realism. These machines vary greatly in size and shape, but are distinguished from vehicles by their humanoid or biomorphic appearance and size-bigger than a human. The term was first used in Japanese ( meka) after shortening the English loanword mekanizumu ( メカニズム, 'mechanism') or mekanikaru ( メカニカル, 'mechanical'), but the meaning in Japanese is more inclusive, and "robot" ( robotto) or "giant robot" is the narrower term. Mechas are typically depicted as humanoid walking vehicles. The term mecha ( Japanese: メカ, Hepburn: meka) may refer to both scientific ideas and science-fiction genres that center on giant robots or machines ( mechs) controlled by people.
